Astana’s iconic ice slides and skating rink close due to sudden thaw

Astana’s popular ice slides and skating rink along the Yesil River embankment have shut down temporarily. The closure comes after a sudden temperature rise weakened the ice, leaving it unsafe for public use. Authorities have warned residents to stay off the river entirely during the New Year holidays. The decision to close the facilities follows a period of unusually mild weather. While December in Astana typically sees highs of -9°C and lows of -18°C, forecasts for December 29–30, 2025, predict temperatures between -3°C and 3°C. These warmer conditions have reduced ice thickness to between 22 centimetres in most areas and 35–37 centimetres near Central Beach. City officials have stressed that the ice must meet strict safety standards before reopening. Emergency services will reassess the thickness before allowing public access again. In the meantime, over 3.5 tons of deicing salt have been spread across roads and pavements since winter began to combat slippery conditions. Residents and visitors are being urged to take extra care when walking or driving. The warning extends beyond the river, as icy patches remain a hazard on streets and sidewalks. The skating rink and slides will stay closed until the ice thickens enough to meet safety requirements. Authorities continue to monitor conditions and advise the public to avoid the river until further notice. The city’s efforts to maintain safe streets and pavements remain ongoing during the holiday period.
