Astana’s deadly thin ice sparks urgent winter safety alerts

Thin ice across Astana’s rivers and lakes has prompted urgent safety warnings. Authorities stress that the current ice thickness—just 1-2 cm—is far too weak to support people. Children and anglers face the highest risks, with uneven ice and hidden open water patches creating deadly hazards.

The Yesil River in Astana remains particularly dangerous. Ice near currents, bridges, and warm water outlets is often thin or unstable. Even areas that appear solid may hide cracks or weak spots.

The current ice conditions in Astana remain life-threatening. Emergency officials, led by Minister Chingis Arinov, continue to warn that no ice is fully safe without proper checks. Following the rules could prevent accidents and save lives this winter.
