Astana's AI-powered Smart City project redefines urban safety and efficiency
Astana is rolling out a major Smart City project to improve urban life. The initiative, developed with Presight AI, aims to enhance public safety, optimise traffic flow, and strengthen coordination between city services. Officials have highlighted the role of digital tools and artificial intelligence in modern urban management.
The project centres on a new digital platform that pulls together data from over 15 municipal and national systems. It also processes real-time inputs from sensors and surveillance devices across the city. A key feature is the Situational Center, designed to monitor and respond to urban challenges efficiently.
Video surveillance already plays a crucial part in Astana's security efforts. With more than 60,000 cameras—many using AI-powered analytics—the system currently helps solve around 50% of reported crimes. This technology has contributed to a drop in crime rates and a rise in law enforcement effectiveness. The push for smarter urban governance aligns with broader Law and Order policies. These measures focus on tightening security and reinforcing discipline in public spaces. In 2026, Astana climbed 24 places in Numbeo's global safety rankings, entering the top 100 safest cities worldwide.
The Smart City platform is set to transform how Astana manages traffic, public safety, and municipal operations. By linking data sources and AI-driven tools, the system will provide faster responses to urban issues. The project builds on existing successes, including improved crime resolution and higher safety rankings.
