Astana warns of deadly thin ice on frozen rivers and ponds

Authorities in Astana have warned residents against walking on frozen rivers and ponds after recent photos showed people risking their safety. The ice in several areas, including the Botanical Garden's pond and the Yesil River, remains dangerously thin for any activity.

Kazhydromet has issued a weather alert for Astana and other cities, urging caution around frozen water bodies. Officials stress that ice must be at least 10 centimetres thick to safely support a person's weight. Current measurements show the ice on the Yesil River and the Botanical Garden's pond is only 2 centimetres thick—far below the safe threshold.

The warnings come as temperatures remain unpredictable, increasing the danger of thin ice. Residents are advised to avoid frozen surfaces unless confirmed safe by experts. Officials continue to monitor conditions and enforce regulations to prevent accidents.
