Astana Opera’s makeup artists bring ‘Rigoletto’ to life with stunning transformations
Astana Opera's Makeup Department, led by Serik Basbayev, recently showcased its talents in Verdi's 'Rigoletto'. The team of nine specialists created dozens of looks for the performance, transforming actors into unrecognizable characters until they spoke.
Medet Chotabayev and Sayan Issin made their debuts as the Duke of Mantua, with Basbayev and his team ensuring their transformations were flawless. The makeup artists also act as psychologists, supporting performers like soprano Yelena Ganzha, who credits them for helping her feel ready to perform.
Assel Zhakupova, another makeup artist, sets the emotional tone for performers before they step onto the stage. The team watches rehearsals from the audience hall to ensure their work translates well under stage lights. Nazym Abubakir, another specialist, thinks of the performer's face as a blank canvas, bringing characters to life over rehearsals and premieres, as Azhar Khassenova enjoys seeing.
The Astana Opera Makeup Department's dedication and skill were on full display in 'Rigoletto'. Their work, from transforming actors to supporting performers emotionally, is crucial to the opera's success. Phrases like 'you are most beautiful today' help performers feel ready to sing, demonstrating the team's holistic approach to their craft.
