Authorities confiscate property belonging to Maradona's attorney and sisters amidst alleged fraud investigation

Diego Maradona's death in 2020, following heart failure and acute pulmonary edema, two weeks after brain surgery, has led to a series of legal battles. Most recently, a medical negligence case is awaiting retrial after a judge had to recuse herself due to her involvement in a clandestine documentary.

The initial accusations were brought forward by Maradona's two daughters, Dalma and Giannina, in 2021, followed by the three other children joining the legal fight against Matias Morla and others. The court has indicted Morla, along with two of his associates, for suspected fraudulent handling of Maradona's assets.

The court alleges that Morla's brand management business was merely a front, and Maradona continued exercising control of his assets until his death. Argentinian officials have seized assets from two of Maradona's sisters, his attorney, and three other individuals, due to allegations of fraudulent management of Maradona's brand.

The seizure is valued at approximately $1.34 million for all the accused. An earlier order for this seizure remains in effect, and a new trial for the medical negligence case is yet to be scheduled. The retrial was scrapped in May after two months of hearings.

Two of Maradona's sisters, Rita and Claudia, and a notary have also been prosecuted as accomplices in the case. The court handling the charges against Diego Maradona's former lawyer Matías Morla and his associates is in Argentina. The case concerns alleged fraud against Maradona's heirs involving misuse of Maradona's name for commercial purposes.

Maradona's children have stated that his brand and its subsidiaries should have been transferred to them upon his death in 2020. The ruling states that under the conditions of Diego Maradona's death, his assets "immediately revert to his heirs." However, the legal fight continues, with the hope of bringing clarity and justice in the case surrounding the legendary footballer's death.
