Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Denies Probe of Former Governor Udom Emmanuel

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has denied any plans to probe former Governor Udom Emmanuel, describing media reports to the contrary as false, speculative, and lacking a factual basis.

Deputy Speaker Kufre-Abasi Edidem made this clarification on Tuesday in Uyo, the state capital. He explained that no committee has been constituted to investigate the ex-governor and that the only committee formed recently deals with unpaid wages of workers at the state-owned St. Gabriel’s Coconut Oil Factory.

Earlier reports had claimed that the Assembly was probing ownership of companies linked to the former governor, including a failed multi-billion-naira coconut refinery. However, these claims have been officially refuted by the Assembly leadership, emphasizing that there is no official position or resolution on such a probe.

The House has urged media outlets to verify facts with official sources before publication to avoid misleading the public. An ad hoc committee has been constituted to investigate the issue raised and report back within one month.

The House was alerted to a report in a newspaper publication that former Governor Udom Emmanuel is facing a probe by the House. However, this publication does not reflect any official position or resolution of the House.

In a statement, the Assembly emphasized that journalism is a noble profession with its strong ethical bent. Media professionals should know where to draw the line between facts and sensationalism, as inaccurate and sensational reporting can mislead the public and undermine democratic institutions. Moreover, such reporting can also undermine the credibility of democratic institutions.

In conclusion, the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has denied any probe of former Governor Udom Emmanuel, and the only committee formed deals with unpaid wages at the state-owned St. Gabriel’s Coconut Oil Factory. The Assembly has urged media outlets to verify facts with official sources before publication to avoid misleading the public.
