The Downlow on Lagos APC's Chairmanship Aspirants
Aspiring Local Government Candidates Given Approval, Resulting in Obasa's Son's Resignation from His Position within the APC
Prepare to meet the contenders aiming for the top position within the All Progressives Congress (APC) of Lagos State, as the primary elections draw near, on May 10, 2025.
A total of 455 aspirants were screened in anticipation of the upcoming local government elections set for July 12th, according to a report from the Screening Committee, jointly signed by Chairman, Babatunde Ogala (SAN), and Secretary, Nurudeen Bamidele.
Of these, a whopping 418 aspirants received the green light, while 14 were given the boot for reasons like missing Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) or inconsistent documentation. Twenty-three aspirants opted to exit the race, either due to unsuccessfulness, absenteeism, or voluntary withdrawal.
One notable absentee from the approved list? Abdulganiyu Obasa, the lad of Mudasiru Obasa, the current Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Though he was a no-show at the screenings, rumors hint that his absence may have more to do with internalunease within the party than administrative oversights.
Abdul, Benched (Possibly) for the Greater Good?
Insiders close to the situation revealed to PUNCH that pressure from party leaders played a significant role in asking Abdulganiyu to step back from the race. There were concerns that, if Abdul entered the fray, it could create chaos within the party. But it was not just uncertainty, it seems the power player behind the scenes played a role:
"Leaders felt that his candidature would cause a crisis in the party. So, he was asked to step down, and his father agreed," an informed source told PUNCH.
Set Sail for the Apeals Committee
The Lagos Publicity Secretary of the APC, Seye Oladejo, confirmed the screening results in a chat with PUNCH, stating that the process was thorough and transparent. Oladejo also shared that an appeals committee has been formed to deal with any grievances or petitions resulting from the screening process.
