Livin' on the Edge, German Style

The Inselpark-Arena was buzzing after the game, but not due to the usual excitement. The sweltering stormy weather in Hamburg had turned the arena into a sauna. Yet, the German women's basketball team took it in their stride, clinching an 80:67 victory against Britain in the final group game of the 2025 European Championship. With 3,414 passionate fans cheering them on, they advanced to the quarterfinals.

Leonie Fiebich, the new captain, was delighted but honest about the team's journey. "Given the setbacks we've faced, many thought we wouldn't make it out of the group," she admitted. With key players like Satou and Nyara Sabally, Alina Hartmann, and Marie Gülich out due to injuries and other reasons, reaching the top eight teams in Europe was an impressive achievement.

A tightrope walk it was, but the joy of survival in front of their home crowd was palpable. Coach Lisa Thomaidis echoed the sentiment, "We're relieved to have moved on. This was a must-win game for us." After a 60:79 loss to Spain, a win against Britain was necessary to sustain their hopes of winning the tournament.

Scoring Highs and Low Ebbs

The German team displayed significant offensive prowess, scoring 89 and 80 points against smaller group opponents Sweden and Britain respectively, without a well-rehearsed team. However, there were some concerns. In the third quarter, they allowed a 12:0 run against Sweden and almost melted down a comfortable 48:32 halftime lead against Britain, emphasizing the need for consistency in the team.

Coach Thomaidis gave her starters few breaks in the first two group games, with Leonie Fiebich even playing the entire 40 minutes against Spain. Only against Britain did Thomaidis see the opportunity to give more playing time to her bench players, as Germany had already pulled away early in the fourth quarter.

The Road to Athens and Beyond

After the group phase in Hamburg, the team had a quick turnaround. On Monday morning at 6 a.m., they boarded a flight for Athens to face Belgium in the quarterfinals. Though they had lost to Belgium during preparations, Fiebner was optimistic, "We may not have gotten the results we wanted last time, but we're a different team now. If you want to win a medal, you have to get past teams like Belgium."

With the minimum goal of the quarterfinals achieved, the team is now setting their sights on their maximum goal once again. Unfortunately, their dreams were dashed as they fell to Belgium 83-59, with Belgium dominating the second half of the game. Despite the loss, the team will undoubtedly learn from the experience and look forward to future opportunities.
