German Films Make a Splash in the Student Academy Awards

The Student Academy Awards, a prestigious honour in the film industry for student projects, has been recognizing international directors and young talents since 1972. This year, two films from the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg in Ludwigsburg, Germany, have made it to the finals.

One of the finalists is "A Sparrow's Song," an animated short film from the Animation Institute of the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg. Director Tobias Eckerlin worked on this poignant piece for three years, with the help of over 50 individuals. The film tells the story of a widowed air raid warden who finds a dying sparrow in the middle of World War II and hopes to save it. The piano playing in "A Sparrow's Song" has become a common language, touching the hearts of viewers worldwide.

Another contender is "The Undying Pain of Existence," another animated film from the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg. Although the details of this film are not yet disclosed, it has managed to secure a spot among the seven nominees from a pool of 3,000 submissions.

In addition to these, "A life model poses at an elite art school - until a nasty mosquito bite tests his self-control" has also been nominated for the Oscars. However, this film is not a part of the Animation Institute of the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg, and its director, Oscar Jacobson, is not affiliated with the Ludwigsburg film school.

While the exact date for the Student Academy Awards ceremony in 2025 is yet to be announced, it is expected to take place in the fall of 2025 at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles. The 98th Academy Awards (Oscars) for 2025 films will take place on March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.
