Aspirations for the presidency of Amaechi dashed; Wike declares ADC ticket unattainable for him
Nyesom Wike Declares Rotimi Amaechi's 2027 Presidential Ambition "Dead on Arrival"
In a bold move, former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has publicly declared that Rotimi Amaechi's presidential ambition for 2027 is "dead on arrival." This statement effectively rules out any chance of Amaechi's successful bid for the presidency in 2027.
Wike made these remarks on Channels Television's Politics Today programme on Tuesday. He accused Amaechi of lacking the ability to fight corruption and enthrone good governance. The former governors' relationship has turned frosty since Wike took office.
Wike believes that Amaechi lacks the viability or political leverage to mount a credible campaign. He suggests that Amaechi does not have sufficient access to government power and resources to deliver results or garner necessary support for a successful presidency.
Interestingly, Wike's remarks contrast with mentions of Amaechi's work as a former Transport Minister and party chairman, where he was credited for facilitating government projects like road constructions. However, Wike's perspective implies that despite these achievements, Amaechi’s presidential bid still lacks the foundation for success in the 2027 elections.
In contrast, Wike endorses support for anyone aligned with President Bola Tinubu, positioning himself as politically aligned with those endorsing Tinubu rather than Amaechi.
Rotimi Amaechi served as governor of oil-rich Niger Delta state from May 2007 to May 2015, and was succeeded by Nyesom Wike. Both politicians are members of different political parties, with Wike being a member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and Amaechi being a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Wike has also accused Amaechi of lacking respect for the judiciary and the rule of law during his tenure as Rivers State governor. He has dismissed the ADC coalition, stating that Nigerians are not looking up to them.
In the 2022 APC presidential primary, Rotimi Amaechi came second after Bola Tinubu. However, Amaechi has expressed knowledge of the weaknesses of President Tinubu, but lost to him mercilessly in the primary. Wike predicts that Amaechi will not get the ADC ticket for the 2027 poll.
Wike's statement underscores perceived weaknesses related to political access and influence, highlighting his political stance against Amaechi’s presidential hopes. It remains to be seen how Amaechi will respond to these allegations and whether he will continue his pursuit of the presidency in 2027.
