Aspendos Festival in Turkey begins with the presentation of Puccini's opera 'Turandot'
The 32nd International Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival kicked off with a grand opening at the ancient Aspendos Theater in Serik/Antalya, Türkiye. This year's festival, steeped in over 2,000 years of history, was a collaborative effort between the Ankara and Antalya State Opera and Ballet Directorates.
The highlight of the opening night was the performance of Giacomo Puccini's opera "Turandot," directed by the renowned Italian director, Vincenzo Grisostomi Travaglini. He brought the "Far East" to life on stage, creating a captivating and immersive experience for the audience.
The lead roles were played by some of the most distinguished artists in the field. Olga Maslova, an internationally acclaimed soprano, portrayed Princess Turandot. Riccardo Massi, a tenor, took on the role of Calaf, while Mithat Karakelle portrayed Timur. Tugba Mankal was cast as Liu, Cem Akyüz played Emperor Altoum, and Emre Uluocak was the Messenger.
The creative team behind this production was equally impressive. Set designer Özgür Usta, costume designer Savaş Camgöz, lighting designer Ali Gökdemir, and choreographer Armağan Davran all contributed to the visual and artistic success of the performance.
In addition to the main cast, the production also featured the Antalya State Opera and Ballet Children's Choir, led by Sinem Ulusoy, and the Ankara State Opera and Ballet Orchestra, conducted by Lorenzo Casriota Skanderberg. Emre Yalcın portrayed the Persian Prince, Y. Emre Pekşen was the character Pong, and Barış Yanç played Pang, while Çetin Kıranbay took on the role of Ping.
The upcoming schedule for the 32nd International Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival includes "Zorba" on Sept. 17, "Swan Lake" on Sept. 20, "Don Quixote" on Sept. 24, "Tosca" on Sept. 27, and a guest performance of "La Traviata." This promises to be a festival filled with diverse and captivating performances, not to be missed.
As the curtain falls on the opening night, it is clear that the 32nd International Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival is set to be a memorable event, showcasing the best of opera and ballet talent from around the world.
