Ashley Johnson Discusses Changes To Yasha's Story In "The Mighty Nein" Season 1, Plus [Spoiler] Voicing Zuala
The first season of The Mighty Nein animated series has brought Yasha Nydoorin’s story to life with key changes from the original campaign. Voiced by Ashley Johnson, Yasha’s character now includes deeper glimpses into her past, including her relationship with her wife, Zuala. The adjustments also account for Johnson’s availability, reshaping how the character’s early absences play out on screen.
In the animated adaptation, Yasha’s journey begins under the control of Obann, a shift from her original introduction in Critical Role’s Campaign 2. This change allows the series to explore her backstory sooner, including emotional moments with Zuala. The latter, voiced by Aimee Carrero, appears in a poignant memory sequence during the Season 1 finale.
The series also reworks Yasha’s early absences, moving them to earlier episodes. This tweak ensures her character remains present despite Ashley Johnson’s scheduling constraints. Additionally, Zuala’s voice actor was later corrected to Anjali Bhimani in official credits. Johnson herself has praised the show’s handling of Yasha’s past, noting how it enriches the character’s depth. The second season promises even more of Yasha, focusing on her dynamics with the main party.
The animated series has reimagined Yasha’s arc, blending new storytelling with practical adjustments. With Zuala’s role expanded and Yasha’s history explored, the show sets up further development in Season 2. Fans can expect her relationships and struggles to take centre stage in upcoming episodes.
