ASEAN Marks the 58th Year with an Emphasis on Unity and Sustainable Growth
In the year 2025, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) adopted the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, a strategic roadmap aiming for a cohesive political community, deeply integrated economy, and high social responsibility. The summit, held in Kuala Lumpur, underscored the theme of "Inclusivity and Sustainability", reflecting ASEAN's goal to build a future where opportunity is accessible to all and growth does not compromise the environment or future generations.
ASEAN's focus on inclusivity and sustainability is not merely a fleeting trend. The organisation is embedding these principles as urgent, concrete strategies across all its initiatives. This approach extends beyond environmental issues such as climate change and renewable energy transition (e.g., ASEAN Power Grid, ASEAN Centre for Climate Change) to economic resilience through supply chain diversification, food and energy security, and green infrastructure development.
The 58th ASEAN anniversary celebrations in August 2025 highlighted such commitments. Inclusive practices, such as the use of sign language interpreters and eco-friendly event materials, signalled ASEAN’s aim to leave no one behind while minimizing environmental footprint.
ASEAN has also deepened partnerships particularly with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), which includes Kuwait. Kuwait formally acceded to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) in 2023, paving the way for enhanced bilateral cooperation (trade, investment, energy and food security, cultural exchanges, and tourism). The 46th ASEAN Summit also featured the second ASEAN-GCC Summit and a trilateral ASEAN-GCC-China Summit, marking a historic step to strengthen economic ties and reduce global tariff dependencies by connecting ASEAN’s talent and energy with Gulf capital and China’s market scale.
As the current Chair of the GCC, Kuwait has been playing a crucial role in building the bridge, mutual interest, and general action plan for 2025-2030 period. ASEAN continues to actively promote multi-faceted cooperation with Kuwait and the Gulf countries.
ASEAN, which was established on August 8, 1967, and consists of 10 Southeast Asian countries with a combined population of 680 million people, has grown from its 5 founding countries. In 2025, ASEAN put forward the motto "Inclusivity and Sustainability" as its key message and goal. ASEAN's GDP growth is estimated to reach 5% in 2024 and may steadily remain at this rate in 2025.
ASEAN has affirmed the importance of sustainable and inclusive development in the face of global challenges. The organisation, which has been an active member since 1995, has made important contributions in various activities and fields, especially as ASEAN Chair in 1998, 2010, and 2020. ASEAN's vision and identity have been widely acknowledged in the Asia-Pacific region and the Gulf region.
In conclusion, ASEAN's state in 2025 is focused on embedding inclusivity and sustainability as central pillars in policy and community building, balancing economic growth with environmental protection and social equity. The organisation's future goals include implementing the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 aiming for political cohesion, economic integration, and social responsibility with an inclusive and sustainable foundation. Cooperation with Kuwait and Gulf countries is expanding through formal treaties, multilateral summits, and collaboration on trade, investment, energy security, and cultural exchange as part of a broader ASEAN-GCC partnership. These efforts reflect ASEAN’s ambition to be resilient, dynamic, and a responsible community regionally and in global partnerships.
