ASEAN leaders fail to issue a new censure of Myanmar's military regime despite concerns.
Myanmar Faces Severe Crisis Amidst Escalating Violence and Worsening Humanitarian Situation
Leaders from Southeast Asia have expressed deep concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation and continued violence in Myanmar, following a summit in Kuala Lumpur. Despite the junta's call for a ceasefire, deadly air strikes on civilian areas persist, with ethnic armed groups and pro-democracy forces bearing the brunt of the attacks.
These strikes continued in the wake of a devastating earthquake in Sagaing in March, which left more than 3,700 dead, over 5,100 injured, and approximately 115 missing, according to the United Nations. The Myanmar junta, internationally ostracized and banned from ASEAN meetings, has garnered support from key allies such as Russia and China, further complicating the crisis.
Junta leader Min Aung Hlaing attended Russia's Victory Day parade in Moscow on May 9, standing alongside President Vladimir Putin. He also met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the event, events considered significant indicators of support for a regime that has lost control over much of the country.
In a joint statement issued on May 27, the leaders of the 10 Southeast Asian nations reaffirmed the bloc's backing of a five-point consensus as a roadmap for resolving Myanmar's crisis. However, the effectiveness of ASEAN's engagement has been limited due to internal divisions and the Myanmar junta's refusal to implement previously agreed-upon measures.
The crisis in Myanmar remains complicated, with ongoing violence, massive humanitarian needs, and a multi-faceted international response. The international community continues to call for peace and unhindered humanitarian access, while allies including Russia and China remain influential supporter of the military regime, hindering prospects for a political solution.
