The Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus is set to captivate audiences with an enticing lineup of productions for the 2025/26 season. The season, which kicks off on September 6, 2025, promises a blend of classic and contemporary theatre, diverse formats, and venues within the Schauspielhaus complex.

Andreas Karlaganis will take over as the new director from Wilfried Schulz, who is stepping down mid-next year. The season opens with "Die Verwandlung" (The Metamorphosis) based on Franz Kafka's work, directed by Kamilė Gudmonaitė. Other highlights include a solo piece titled "Barfuß Nackt Herz in der Hand" and William Shakespeare’s "Was ihr wollt" ("Twelfth Night").

The Young Theatre (Junges Schauspiel) program will also be a significant part of the season, with performances such as "Timm Thaler or The Sold Laugh" by James Krüss at The Central, located near the main station. The Central will serve as a shared home for The Young Theater and City:Collective, aiming to become a "creative power center" in a challenging environment.

The season offers something for everyone, with productions like "The Neverending Story" by Michael Ende being prepared for the big stage in May 2026, and "The Door" by Gregory Caers, a source of great fun for the very young.

Notable plays include Bernadette Sonnenbichler's directorial take on Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" before she leaves to become artistic director in Heidelberg, and "The Great Divide" by Ayad Akhtar. The small house will also host "Three Sisters", a Chekhov fantasy in the present, for which Laura Naumann is still looking for "musical and female socialized people aged 25 and over".

The season will delve into thought-provoking themes, with "Blizzard", a Russian winter drama about a doctor, a coachman, and the force of nature, and "1984" with the title "Big Brother Is Watching You". The playbill, richly illustrated with original actor portraits by Thomas Rabsch, will be distributed free of charge at the box office and in the foyer of the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus.

The 2025/26 playbill celebrates "the power of art" and claims "Dignity and Freedom" for everyone. The season will also feature workshops, performances, and various theatre formats, including "Move it! Sing it!", a monthly event where everyone can sing together, and "Drag & Biest", a queer party by Effi Biest, the drag queen of the Schauspielhaus.
