Bollywood Singer Kavita Krishnamurthy Advocates for Indian Talent Amidst Pakistani Artist Controversy
Artist Kavita Krishnamurthy, in response to calls to prohibit Pakistani artists in India after the Pahalgam attack, expresses her viewpoint that music transcends religion, stating, "but..."
In a candid conversation with Zoom, Kavita Krishnamurthy, a popular Bollywood singer, threw her hat into the ongoing debate about the relevance of Pakistani artists in India's entertainment industry. Amid the recurring calls for a total ban on Pakistani artists in India post the Pahalgam attack, she shared her perspective.
Music transcends all boundaries, Kavita asserted. For her, music is all about the seven notes, and talent should be applauded irrespective of its origin. "I mean, music has no religion, it's all about the music," she said, noting that the quality of an artist's work is what matters most to her. However, she added that it's crucial to nurture local Indian talent as well, since there are numerous homegrown artists eager for their chance in the limelight.
"You know, Pakistani artists have sung a lot in India and people have accepted them. I suppose that will continue," she remarked. But at the same time, she believes that Indian artists merit equal attention and opportunities. "There's more than enough talent here in India to explore, so why not give those opportunities to them too?" she queried.
Expressing her sorrow over the Pahalgam attack, Kavita offered her deepest condolences to the families of the victims. "I'm absolutely heartbroken about what happened in Pahalgam," she shared. As a patriot, she endorsed the decisions taken by her government and expressed respect for her nation's leaders.
Background: The Pahalgam attack resulted in the deaths of 26 people, predominantly civilians, on April 22, 2023. It was claimed by Lashkar-e-Taiba's proxy, The Resistance Front (TRF), and was notably coincidental with US Vice President JD Vance's visit to India.
As a response, India implemented a series of measures against Pakistan, like the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, the shutdown of the Attari border crossing, and the downgrading of diplomatic ties based on assumed cross-border links to the incident. Furthermore, Instagram accounts of several Pakistani actors, including Hania Aamir, have been blocked in India.
