Art World Personality Hilde Lynn Helphenstein Winds Down Jerry Gogosian Instagram Account, Pursues New Projects
After a three-year run, Hilde Lynn Helphenstein, the satirical artist behind the popular Instagram account Jerry Gogosian, has announced the winding down of the account. However, Helphenstein may not be completely leaving the digital or art world, suggesting possible future activities.
Helphenstein, who ran her own gallery in Los Angeles before creating the Jerry Gogosian account in 2018, has amassed 151,000 followers with her acerbic commentary on the art market. The account has been a platform for Helphenstein to opine on various topics, ranging from auction records to artist representation, mocking dealer Larry Gagosian, and documenting her travels at art fairs.
In an article from The Art Newspaper dated August 21, 2025, Helphenstein mentioned that she is exploring new directions within the art world, although details were not fully disclosed. The article also reported that Helphenstein might continue using Instagram or other platforms in some capacity.
Helphenstein's decision to wind down the Jerry Gogosian account comes after a series of projects and personal challenges. In 2022, Helphenstein curated a Sotheby's sale, and in 2024, she signed with the talent agency UTA. However, Helphenstein contracted a disease that had her bedridden for a year before launching the Jerry Gogosian account. Despite the challenges, Helphenstein stated that she has "so loved and enjoyed being Jerry," but it is time to let it go.
Helphenstein's account has not been without controversy. In 2020, she urged people to come forward with sexual harassment allegations against Sam Orlofsky, leading to his dismissal from the Gagosian gallery. Last year, Helphenstein mocked the name of a Sotheby's auctioneer, leading to accusations of xenophobia. She later apologized.
As Helphenstein moves on from the Jerry Gogosian account, she is optimistic about the future. She mentioned that she has a "wide open road" and is working towards manifesting the next thing she will go onto do. The nature of this new endeavor is unknown, but Helphenstein is eager to share it with the world.
The Jerry Gogosian account initially ran anonymously, but Helphenstein later made it public and revealed herself as its creator. Despite some missteps along the way, Helphenstein's unique voice and perspective have made a lasting impact on the art world, and her fans eagerly await her next move.
