Art revolutionary Ai Weiwei takes his activism and artistic creations to the battlefront in Ukraine.
In the heart of Kyiv, renowned artist Ai Weiwei is unveiling a major installation, titled Three Perfectly Proportioned Spheres and Camouflage Uniforms Painted White. This thought-provoking work, commissioned by Ribbon International, will run from September 14 to November 30 at Pavilion 13, a renovated Soviet-era venue.
The installation is a play on Leonardo da Vinci’s mathematical illustrations, set against the backdrop of the military environment. It symbolically explores the intertwining of art, mathematics, and the military universe, reflecting the resilience and identity expressed through cultural symbols amid war.
Ai Weiwei's visit to Ukraine's eastern front, near Kharkiv, was not merely a tourist expedition. He met and documented Ukrainian soldiers, fighters, volunteers, and cultural figures amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. His journey was a testament to his long-standing commitment to opposing war and supporting freedom.
Kharkiv, a city under regular Russian bombardment, serves as a poignant backdrop for Ai Weiwei's work. The artist was photographed in black fatigues marked "Khartiia", a volunteer unit absorbed into Ukraine's National Guard. His visit coincided with renewed Russian strikes, underscoring the danger and intensity of the conflict.
Ai Weiwei calls his installation a "dialogue about rationality and irrationality." The work epitomizes his belief that art can act as a form of solidarity and resistance—extending the struggle beyond physical combat to cultural and spiritual realms.
Meanwhile, Pyotr Verzilov, Pussy Riot spokesperson, is among the fighters in the Khartiia volunteer unit. Verzilov documented Ai Weiwei's visit in videos and called the artist "the chief artist of modernity."
Unfortunately, the conflict in Ukraine continues to claim lives. At least 14 people were killed in Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia hours after Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky met President Donald Trump and European leaders. The meeting in Alaska between Trump and Putin did not result in a truce.
In this context, Ai Weiwei's visit and installation highlight the strength and resolve of Ukrainians defending their country while emphasizing how art preserves collective memory and national identity in times of conflict. His engagement underscores the importance of witnessing and amplifying the cultural dimension of resistance through art.
