Art Institute of Chicago welcomes back James Rondeau as its director, after his hiatus due to a plane mishap.

James Rondeau, long-time director of the Art Institute of Chicago, will return to his role at the museum after a brief hiatus caused by an incident during a flight to Germany. The museum announced that Rondeau will resume his position starting Monday, following an independent investigation into the incident.

According to reports from CBS News, the incident took place on a flight from Chicago to Munich in April. During the flight, it's alleged that Rondeau removed his clothes, causing police to be called upon landing. The details of the incident suggest that it occurred after Rondeau had consumed alcohol and taken prescription medication.

The Art Institute of Chicago issued a statement regarding the incident, describing it as "bizarre." They stated that Rondeau took a voluntary leave while the investigation was being conducted. Following the completion of the investigation, the museum's board leadership expressed confidence in Rondeau's leadership and ability to continue as the President and Director of the museum.

Rondeau, who has spent 27 years at the museum, issued a statement expressing his regret for the incident and its impact on the museum and his colleagues. He noted his gratitude for the opportunity to continue furthering the museum's mission.

Since joining the museum in 1998 as an associate curator of contemporary art, Rondeau has risen through the ranks and made significant contributions to the institution. During his tenure as director, the museum has seen major developments, such as the receipt of a $75 million donation for campus redevelopment and the expansion of art galleries.

Despite the controversy surrounding the incident, the museum has reaffirmed its support for Rondeau as a leader moving forward. Rondeau is expected to return to work starting on Monday, with the museum looking forward to continuing its work under his leadership.
