Born in Rhondda, Wales on July 11, 1941, this chap commenced his film journey as a plastering apprentice at the Associated British Picture Corporation at just 15. lad's thirst for knowledge led him to take architecture and building construction classes at Willesden Technical College simultaneously.

Dilley carved out his spotlight with productions like The Three Musketeers (1973), The Four Musketeers: Milady's Revenge (1974), and Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), from where there was no stopping him. His work on ye olde sci-fi saga, alongside other talents, etched a significant mark, establishing his cred in the industry. Superman (1978), Alien (1979), and the Empire Strikes Back (1980) sequel solidified his position as a go-to art director for cinematic grandeur.

Collaborating with Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and Ridley Scott, Dilley delivered jaw-dropping visuals for Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and An American Werewolf in London (1981), proving his brilliance in horror-comedy and action-adventure. Two Academy Awards (shared with Norman Reynolds) for best art direction - one for New Hope and another for Raiders - along with BAFTA's Welsh branch's Outstanding Contribution to Film and Television Award in 2020, cemented his legendary status.

Withdrawing from the limelight in 2017 after wrapping up work on the British kids' show Teacup Travels, this legend retired to spend cherished moments with his loving family. Survived by his wife Leslie and five children, he left behind a rich legacy that lives on in over six decades worth of iconic films and his personally-built family home paying tribute to his work. Although he passed away due to Alzheimer's complications on May 20 at 84, his quirky British humor, incredible work ethic, and kindness will never be forgotten.
