Art's essence resides within the public, not confined to galleries, as stated by Thai artist Rirkrit Tiravanija.

Art created by Thai artist Rirkrit Tiravanija exists within the individuals themselves, rather than being confined to galleries.

Renowned Thai artist Rirkrit Tiravanija recently spoke at Delhi's Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, sharing his unique approach to art and mentorship. His teachings encourage young artists to pause, rely on memory, and describe their experiences before creating new work or posts.

Tiravanija's artistic journey is marked by works that challenge traditional notions of art by inviting viewers to engage socially. One of his most famous pieces, "Untitled (Pad Thai)", was cooked in a gallery in 1990. By cooking and sharing this traditional Thai dish, Tiravanija blurred the boundaries between art, life, and cultural experience, creating a communal event that emphasized exchange and participation.

"Untitled (Pad Thai)" can be seen as a self-reflexive counterpoint to Martha Rosler's "Semiotics of the Kitchen", a feminist video artwork that critiques the domestic and cultural roles imposed on women. While Rosler critiques dominant cultural constructions, Tiravanija uses his own cultural heritage in an interactive, communal context that resists exoticization or commodification. Instead of appropriating Thai culture from an outside perspective, Tiravanija's work reclaims and re-presents it within the art context.

This approach challenges the attitudes underlying cultural appropriation by making culture a lived, shared experience rather than an aesthetic or commercial token. It highlights issues of authorship, authenticity, and intercultural dialogue that are central to debates around appropriation in art.

Rirkrit Tiravanija's works often become spaces where people can connect and interact. In the past, he has staged unconventional exhibitions, such as a "secret" exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art where students displayed their one-inch-by-one-inch artwork without permission. By doing so, he emphasized the social and cultural interactivity of art, rather than passive viewing.

Tiravanija's view of art is as a social space rather than an object to be made, finished, and shown. He expresses concern about the erosion of our ability to describe and discuss art due to the rapid scroll of social media. His concern is that the loss of language and dependence on the internet over direct observation and reflection is a sign of the times.

Born in Buenos Aires to Thai parents, Tiravanija has lived in various countries, including Montreal, Chicago, New York, Chiang Mai, and Berlin. His diverse experiences have undoubtedly influenced his art, which aims at human connections and is built around participatory installations.

In a talk titled 'Making Without Objects', Tiravanija urged young artists to observe and reflect on their experiences before turning them into objects or posts. His teaching approach is not about teaching, but showing the path he took and encouraging critical thinking. Through his art and teachings, Tiravanija continues to challenge and inspire artists and audiences alike.

"Rirkrit Tiravanija's artwork, such as 'Untitled (Pad Thai)', blurs the lines between art and culture by encapsulating traditional Thai experiences in a communal, interactive setting, thereby infusing entertainment into his audience's cultural exposure."

"Through works like 'Untitled (Pad Thai)', Tiravanija redefines culture not just as an aesthetic construct, but as a living, shared experience, thus fostering a vibrant dialogue on authorship, authenticity, and intercultural exchange within the realm of entertainment and art."
