Richter, Baselitz and Newcomers - Art Cologne Begins - Art Cologne 2022 Unveils Priceless Masterpieces and Rising Stars in Germany

Art Cologne, the world's oldest and Germany's largest art fair, is underway in Cologne from October 13 to 16, 2022. This prestigious event brings together over 170 galleries from 25 countries, showcasing artworks ranging from affordable pieces to multimillion-euro masterpieces.

Founded in 1967 as the Cologne Art Market, Art Cologne has evolved into a hub for both established and young exhibitors seeking exchange and commerce. This year's fair features a diverse range of galleries, including many young exhibitors from cities like São Paulo, Berlin, Istanbul, and Tallinn. The fair's director, Daniel Hug, describes the art world as vibrant and curious despite current challenges.

The fair boasts an impressive lineup of artworks, with Gerhard Richter's abstract painting 'U.L.' being the most expensive at €3.2 million. Other notable pieces include Rudolf Schlichter's 'Speedy Standing' at €1.75 million and Georg Baselitz's 'Traumflug Sex' at €2.5 million. However, there are also more affordable options available, with pieces by lesser-known artists starting at just a few thousand euros. Anke Schmidt of the German Galleries and Art Dealers Association (BVDG) notes that the reduced VAT rate for commercial art sales has positively impacted galleries.

Art Cologne continues to be a significant platform for the art world, bringing together a diverse range of galleries and artworks. Despite current challenges, the art world remains vibrant and curious, as reflected in the variety of pieces on display at this year's fair.
