Arsonist receives a six-year sentence for triggering a fire due to thirst
A 38-year-old man has been sentenced to six years in prison by the Regional Court of Stralsund for setting fires to a tennis club shed and a carport next to a residential building in Bergen on Rügen last October. The fires caused nearly 700,000 euros in damage to the house next to the carport, which also burned down due to the blaze.
The man admitted to the crimes but the motive behind his actions remains unclear. Witnesses and an expert were heard during the two-day trial, which began on Monday, but no new insights into the motive were provided.
The man was arrested shortly after the incidents and has been in custody since then. His detention order was lifted, but he was re-detained again since late May due to a new detention order.
During the trial, the man admitted that he was aware the house could catch fire when he set the fire at the carport. However, no new facts about his awareness of the potential for the fires to spread were provided.
The man also cited alcohol and painkiller consumption as factors in his crimes. But no new facts about his consumption of these substances were provided in court.
The majority of the man's sentence relates to the incident where the house burned down. Two additional cases of arson, one on a fence, were not considered in the verdict.
It is important to note that the verdict in this case is not yet final. The man has the right to appeal the decision.
