Arsenal Prepared for Summer Spending Spree, Eyeing Gyokeres and Zubimendi

North London giants Arsenal are set to have a busy summer transfer window as they look to end their 22-year Trophy drought.

The Gunners, who have finished second in the Premier League for the third consecutive season, are keen on bolstering their squad ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Mikel Arteta's side have fallen short in the title race this term, and the Spaniard is determined to end their barren spell. He has not lifted a trophy since winning the FA Cup in 2020, with this season's run to the Champions League semi-final being their closest yet.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Arteta admitted, "We are unsatisfied and upset. But I think we are on the right trajectory. What I can promise is that I will do my best, and I will give my life, and get every drop of everybody here to squeeze it and get the best out of them."

Arsenal's transfer plans for the summer focus on key positions, with a targeted approach rather than a wholesale squad overhaul. Two players reportedly high on Arteta's wishlist are Martin Zubimendi and Viktor Gyokeres.

Arsenal are understood to have reached an agreement to secure the services of Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. A £51million move will see the Euro 2024 winner join the Emirates Stadium ranks after making 47 appearances this season.

The Gunners are also leading the race to sign Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon. The Swedish striker, who netted 53 goals in just 51 appearances this term, is one of the club's leading attacking targets.

The arrivals of Zubimendi and Gyokeres would provide Arteta with exciting options, allowing him to name competitive line-ups next season. Two potential line-ups for the 2023/24 season are:

Same system, new stars:

Arteta has been associated with his favored 4-3-3 formation in recent seasons. The trio in midfield provides both defense and attack support. Zubimendi's arrival could offer more attacking freedom to Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard, with Thomas Partey providing the third midfield option currently out of contract this summer. Gyokeres is expected to lead the line, with Bukayo Saka featuring on the right wing.

Using the target man:

With Gyokeres providing a physical presence in the attack, Arteta can switch to a system where the striker would hold the ball up and allow his teammates to get forward. This system would enable Zubimendi and Rice to play as a midfield pair behind Odegaard, with the two wingers starting deeper before making forward runs to support their Norwegian playmaker.
