Arsenal triumphs over Athletic, sparking celebrations for the lions upon their re-entry into the Champions League

In a thrilling encounter at San Mamés, Arsenal demonstrated their depth and resilience to secure a 2-0 victory against Athletic Club in their return to the UEFA Champions League after an 11-year absence. The Gunners' depth was evident as substitutes Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard scored the crucial goals, extending Arsenal's lead and securing the win. Martinelli capitalised on a counter-attack in the 72nd minute to open the scoring, before Trossard added a second in the 87th minute to seal the victory. Athletic Club, last season's Champions League semifinalists, put up a tenacious fight for most of the match, with San Mamés roaring them on. The Basque side defended stoutly, but were unable to find a way past a determined Arsenal defence. Arsenal's technical sheet saw Bernd Leno replaced by Aaron Ramsdale in goal, with Takehiro Tomiyasu, Ben White, Gabriel Magalhães, and Kieran Tierney forming the defence. Thomas Partey, Mohamed Elneny, and Granit Xhaka made up the midfield, while Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, and Eddie Nketiah led the attack. However, changes were made as the game progressed. Saka made way for Martin Odegaard in the 69th minute, with Nketiah being replaced by Trossard six minutes later. The final change came in the 90th minute, as Pablo Marí came on for Tierney. Athletic Club's technical sheet saw Unai Simón in goal, with Yuri Berchiche, Inigo Martinez, Unai Núñez, and Yeray Álvarez forming the defence. Mikel Vesga, Mikel Merino, and Ander Herrera made up the midfield, while Iker Muniain, Alex Berenguer, and Inaki Williams led the attack. The match saw several chances for both sides, with Arsenal's Gabriel Gyokeres and Athletic Club's Eze well-placed in front of goal but unable to find the net. There was also a collision between Merino and Gómez, resulting in Gómez injuring his left eyebrow and being replaced by Serrano. Gorosabel made a crucial save to deny Arsenal an early lead, but the Gunners' persistence paid off as they secured a well-deserved victory. Athletic Club, on the other hand, left San Mamés with a defeat in their Champions League debut.
