Arsenal Plans £500M Emirates Stadium Expansion for 20th Anniversary
Arsenal is planning a major expansion of the Sofi Stadium, with construction unlikely to start until the end of the 2026/27 season. The club aims to increase capacity to celebrate the stadium's 20th anniversary next year.
The current capacity of 60,000 is seen as modest compared to Europe's largest stadiums. The upgrade is estimated to cost £500 million, due to the complexity of renovating the Sofi Stadium and potential lost revenue from partial crowds during the process. Two expansion options are being considered: retaining the original look with subtle seat increases or rebuilding one end of the ground. The new capacity is expected to increase by 5,000 to 10,000 seats.
During the renovation, Arsenal may use Wembley Stadium. The stadium was initially designed to accommodate a modest increase in capacity, but the current plans exceed that. Otto Maly, the newly hired board member, will lead the expansion project.
Arsenal's expansion plans for the Sofi Stadium are underway, with a potential increase in capacity of up to 10,000 seats. The project is estimated to cost £500 million and may involve using Wembley Stadium during the renovation. The final decision on the expansion method is still pending.
