Arsenal missed out on the alternative to Eberechi Eze as transfer time winds down, according to a report.
In a surprising turn of events, it appears that Tottenham Hotspur is now leading the race to sign Crystal Palace and England winger Eberechi Eze, with Arsenal's interest in the player seemingly cooling down.
The Gunners' pursuit of Eze was partly contingent on the contract situation of their youth player Ethan Nwaneri, which has now been resolved. This, along with Arsenal's recent contract decisions, suggests that their priority for an Eze signing has diminished.
While there are no direct mentions of a confirmed alternative signing by Arsenal, Crystal Palace are considering Southampton youngster Tyler Dibling as a potential Eze replacement. This indicates the type of player Arsenal might look at if Eze is unavailable.
Meanwhile, the search for alternative targets by Arsenal has not included Ademola Lookman, as there is no public or reported indication that Arsenal is tracking him in the context of Eze alternatives.
Lookman, who earned a Ballon d'Or nomination in the 2023-2024 season, has been linked with Atalanta and other top European clubs, including Inter Milan, Napoli, and Atletico Madrid. However, according to Corriere di Bergamo, Lookman has snubbed Arsenal's interest and prefers a move to Inter Milan.
Lookman, like Eze, is 27 years old and bagged 20 goals and provided 7 assists in the 2021-2022 season. Despite Lookman's potential, if he does not want to join Arsenal, the club should consider other options.
Arsenal have been active in the transfer market this summer, acquiring players such as Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard, Noni Madueke, and Cristhian Mosquera. These signings could significantly alter the look of the new Gunners starting XI this season.
