Arrests Underway for the Attack on Bangladesh Consulate in New York: Announcement by the Embassy's Press Secretary

The Bangladesh Consulate General in New York has been the scene of a disturbing incident, with several arrests made in connection with the violent disruption that took place on 24 August.

According to reports, Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md Mahfuj Alam was harassed by Awami League activists and supporters at the consulate. The harassment included egg-throwing and shouting slogans against Mahfuj, the interim government, and Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus. Some demonstrators also broke the consulate's glass doors.

In a statement, Mortuza, the Consul General of Bangladesh in New York, clarified that no compromise has taken place with the Awami League. He emphasized that there is no room for secrecy or compromise in the resolution of the matter. Mortuza also stated that no one can negotiate or influence investigators on such cases in the US.

Mortuza further clarified that some people are spreading false information about the attack on the consulate, including claims that a case was filed and that he compromised with the Awami League. In reality, no case has been filed yet; only a complaint has been lodged. The stage for filing a case will arrive after the investigation is complete.

The consulate or embassy cannot comment during an ongoing probe. However, Mortuza has assured that the New York Consulate will clarify the outcome of the investigation once it is complete. As of the second week of September, the US government informed the Bangladesh Embassy that multiple individuals have been arrested, but the exact number remains undisclosed as the investigation is ongoing.

The Bangladesh Embassy and the New York Consulate are closely monitoring the matter, in coordination with the New York Diplomatic Security Wing and the New York Mayor's Office. Mortuza rejected allegations of compromise with the Awami League, stating that it is impossible due to the ban on the party for terrorist activities and crimes against humanity.

US authorities have also assured that they will formally notify the New York Consulate and the Embassy once the investigation is complete. The legal procedure in the US works such that a complaint is lodged before a case is filed. A written complaint, including names of the attackers and video footage of the incident, has been submitted to US authorities by the New York Consulate.

Mortuza emphasized that there is no room for secrecy or compromise in the resolution of the matter. He reiterated that the matter will be transparently resolved once the investigation is complete. The US investigation process is generally time-consuming and no investigation is expedited under anyone's influence.
