Torre Pacheco, a town in the region of Murcia, Spain, has been rocked by a series of violent incidents and arrests, targeting the North African community in the town. The unrest was triggered by an attack on a 68-year-old local pensioner named Domingo, which ignited racial and political hostility.

The violence began after Domingo was brutally beaten by a youth of Maghrebi origin. This assault, which occurred in broad daylight, set off a chain of events that involved groups of residents and outsiders armed with knives, sticks, and stones, seeking revenge mostly against the immigrant community.

Over several consecutive nights, clashes occurred despite a large deployment of security forces. The violence included burning containers, street fights, targeting people perceived to be immigrants, and damage to property. The authorities had to reinforce police presence with a special deployment of 75 Civil Guard officers.

In response to the unrest, eight individuals have been arrested. Five Spaniards, mostly linked to far-right extremism, and three North Africans, including two who helped the alleged attacker of Domingo flee and destroy evidence, were taken into custody. The primary attacker has also been detained, and the police are continuing to identify and detain others involved.

The Torre Pacheco City Council and the Murcia government delegation called for calm and condemned hate speech propagation. The conservative Popular Party (PP) advocated for increased police presence and emphasized security, while the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) and Podemos condemned the violence, calling it a "racist hunt" and blaming far-right groups for inciting hatred. Vox, a far-right party, avoided condemning the persecutions and organized rallies with anti-immigration messages, contributing to the heightened tensions.

The clashes have shattered the previous sense of peaceful coexistence between Spanish locals and the Moroccan community, especially in the San Antonio neighborhood where many Moroccans live. Some local residents attribute the unrest to hate speech and far-right provocations rather than intrinsic local tensions.

The mayor of Torre Pacheco, Pedro Ángel Roca, stated that the number of police officers will be increased in the coming days. The clashes have highlighted deep divisions aggravated by far-right groups and political rhetoric, causing serious social disruption in this Murcia town.

In the aftermath of the violent incidents in Torre Pacheco, the town council and the Murcia government have called for an increase in the community and employment policies to address the escalating racial and political tensions. Amidst the clashes, various political parties have taken different stances, with the PP advocating for enhanced police presence for security, while the PSOE and Podemos condemn the violence as a racist hunt. Simultaneously, the far-right Vox party has organized rallies with anti-immigration messages, contributing to the heightened conflicts and emphasizing the need for adopting general news and crime-and-justice policies to address the escalating war-and-conflicts within the community.
