Arrests Made in Two Different Terrorism-Related Inquiries (Total of Eight Individuals)
In a dramatic turn of events, eight lads have been taken into custody by the Metropolitan Police in two independent, yet "highly significant" counter-terrorism investigations.
Over the weekend, counter-terror officers nabbed five men – four being Iranian nationals – as they hit various locations across the country in a coordinated sweep. All the suspects are now in police custody.
The Met announced that these busts were linked to a "suspected plot to strike a specific location."
Late at night, the force provided an update, stating: "Officers have communicated with the affected site to inform them and offer relevant advice and support. However, for operational reasons, we cannot disclose additional information at present."
Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the Met's Counter Terrorism Command, commented: "Counter-terrorism forces, aided by officers and colleagues from across the country, have executed arrests in two critical operations. Both investigations have been designed to ensure public safety from looming threats."
Regarding the nature of the plot, he tactfully remained tight-lipped about potential connections to Israel, but described it as "significant" and noteworthy for the frequently monumental scale of actions involved.
He also asked the public to avoid speculation and "avoid certain information circulating online."
MI5 director general Ken McCallum hinted in October that the intelligence agency had responded to 20 "potentially deadly" Iranian-backed plots since 2022. He echoed concerns of a potential "rise or broadening of Iranian state aggression in the UK."

Kids Shaken by Police Presence
Resident Kyle Warren of Rochdale witnessed one of the arrests at a neighboring house. His children were playing in the garden when they dashed into the house, frightened because a man wearing a mask had instructed them to go inside.
"Naturally, I got worried, so I went to investigate," Mr. Warren told our reporter Lisa Dowd.
As he stepped out, he heard a deafening explosion and saw dozens of police officers with weapons, ordering everyone back into the house.
From his upstairs window, he could hear "loud shouting inside the house" and saw a man being yanked out from the back of the house, hurled into nearby bushes, and then handcuffed.
Warren estimated there were around 20 to 30 officers with weapons present.
"It's just astounding, really. You don't expect this sort of thing to happen on your doorstep."
His daughters were "terrified... They’ve never seen a gun before, so to witness 20 men with masks and guns sprinting around was quite daunting for them."
Mr. Warren, who has lived in his house for little over a year, said he only saw rare activity at the suspects' house and even wagered it was unoccupied.
Searches and Arrests Nationwide
The Metropolitan Police disclosed that officers were conducting searches at several addresses in Greater Manchester, London, and Swindon in relation to the investigation.
The five suspects detained included:
- A 29-year-old man arrested in the Swindon area
- A 46-year-old man arrested in west London
- A 29-year-old man arrested in the Stockport area
- A 40-year-old man arrested in the Rochdale area
- A man of unspecified age arrested in the Manchester area

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper underscored the magnitude of the operations, commenting: "These incidents represent some of our biggest counter-state threat and counter-terrorism operations that we've witnessed in recent times. The complexity of the challenges we face regarding national security continues."
Earlier, she lauded the work of the police and security services, expressing gratitude for their efforts in a statement. She also emphasized the importance of adapting to evolving national security threats.
In the previous year, the government designated the entire Iranian state, including its intelligence services, as falling under the enhanced tier of the new foreign influence registration scheme. This legislation requires anyone recruited by Iran to carry out duties on its behalf to disclose their activities or face jail time.
In light of these events, insights on war, politics, and general-news might involve discussions on the ongoing counter-terrorism investigations linked to potential Iranian threats, as well as the alleged Iranian government's increasing aggression within the UK. Additionally, crime-and-justice matters could center around the arrests and detentions of suspects in multiple locations across the country, including the use of force and the impact on local residents.
