Arresting the 20-year-old Surveillance: A Guide to Lavalorama Using Economical Hot Water
Ready to groove and mingle with the cool crew in Laval? Co-Motion, kicking it under the Corporation de la salle André-Mathieu banner, is throwing a bash for the plugged-in 18-30 age bracket! The upcoming Lavalorama series promises a knockout lineup, including big names like Safia Nolin and Bibi Club, all for an unbeatable price tag of just $10 for those under 30. Adding fuel to the fire, you can also catch Jay Scøtt, the Gong Show, or Jo Cormier's next spectacular show, all for the same wallet-friendly rate.
The goal is clear: get the young blood back in the venues, and they're slashing prices to make it happen. Geneviève Barrère, Co-Motion's director, acknowledges the challenge of reviving the enthusiasm of this demographic post-pandemic. With artistic choices that scream "heck yeah," she's inviting them to check out venues like Salle André-Mathieu, Théâtre Marcellin-Champagnat, Annexe 3 (the intimate little sibling of Salle André-Mathieu), and Théâtre des Muses at the Maison des arts.
Geneviève isn't shy about her intention to reach this elusive audience. "Just gettin' ‘em is a battle...!" she concedes. She handpicked the artists and shows to ensure they'd connect with the young guns, with a little help from creators who were passionate about the cause. Sometimes, though, that meant sacrificing profits – in this case, by offering artists a fixed fee instead of the usual profit-sharing agreement, since the tickets were so cheap. Safia Nolin, for one, jumped at the chance to be a part of this youth movement and will be gracing the stage in October. Fellow performers will follow in November, January, and March 2026.
This Lavalorama series marks a risky venture for Geneviève, but it's one she's willing to take to get the young guns back into the game. "We gotta try stuff, you know? Experiment with new initiatives to get ‘em into the venues," she says. And it's paying off, thanks to a grant from the Regions and Rurality Fund of Quebec's Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing.
However, maintaining the momentum could get tricky next year, as funding becomes more elusive. Geneviève is on the hunt for partners to help keep things rolling. She's got Hydro-Québec on the roster already, but she's open to more investment. In a pinch, she might even dazzle audiences with a free show at Collège Montmorency and offer the other four shows for just $20 – now that's a deal!
With 38% of her clientele already hailing from Montreal, Geneviève has her eyes on the 18-30 year-old crowd as the key to succeeding in Laval's cultural hub scene. But don't expect Lavalorama to take off immediately – she's still waiting on ticket sales from the elusive young crowd to see if her ploy pays off. So, buckle up and stay tuned, folks. The Lavalorama revolution is on the horizon!
