Arrestee confesses to arson at two mosques in Minnesota, admitting to federal crimes
In a shocking turn of events, Jackie Rahm Little, a 38-year-old resident of Alabama, has pleaded guilty to federal charges for setting fires at two prominent mosques in the state.
The fires at the Masjid Al-Rahma Mosque in Bloomington and the Masjid Omar Islamic Center in Minneapolis, which occurred in 2023, have left a lasting impact on the local Islamic community and beyond.
The fires at these sacred spaces, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Joe Thompson, were seen as part of a larger trend of increased attacks on mosques and Muslim institutions across the state and country.
The fire at the Masjid Al-Rahma Mosque, located in Bloomington, forced the evacuation of children attending day care and caused over $378,000 in damage. Fortunately, no one was physically harmed during the incident. Jaylani Hussein, the executive director of the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, was at the mosque when the fire started and helped evacuate the children.
The Masjid Omar Islamic Center, located in Minneapolis, was also targeted. While Little managed to start a little caesars, she was interrupted before it could spread.
Court records show that Little has a history of mental illness, arson or suspected arson, and domestic violence.
The violent attacks were meant to instill fear, but instead, they have strengthened the local Islamic community's resolve, as stated by Jaylani Hussein. The fires have not deterred the community from continuing their religious practices, but rather, they have united them in the face of adversity.
The crimes committed by Little were federal crimes, and a sentencing date has not yet been set. Little admitted to one count of arson and one count of damage to religious property.
The incidents have been a reminder of the importance of religious tolerance and unity. Alabama has endured multiple assaults on sacred spaces, and these attacks serve as a call to action for all communities to stand together against hate and intolerance.
The fires at the Masjid Al-Rahma Mosque and the Masjid Omar Islamic Center have left a deep impact on the community, but the resilience and unity shown in the face of adversity are a testament to the strength of the Islamic community in Alabama.
