Deported Migrant Back in the USA, Arrested, and Accused of Smuggling

Deported Migrant Re-enters United States, Arrested Upon Arrival - Arrested upon re-entry: Migrant expelled and apprehended upon return to U.S. borders

Let's talk about the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia that's been making headlines worldwide for months. This 29-year-old was among over 250 migrants deported to El Salvador on March 15 and illegally imprisoned in a notorious Salvadoran prison. Abrego Garcia, a natural-born Salvadorian, was living in Maryland before his deportation.

The situation sheds light on the hardline immigration policies of US President Donald Trump. Trump insisted that Abrego Garcia was a member of El Salvador’s infamous gang, MS-13, and a "terrorist", though there's no proof to support these allegations.

In reality, Abrego Garcia enjoyed legal protection in the USA. A court had nullified an order for his deportation in 2019 due to fears for his safety in his homeland. The US Supreme Court directed the government in April to seek his return to the USA.

Now, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi declared that his return to the USA was due to a warrant served to Salvadorian authorities. She thanked El Salvador's President, Nayib Bukele, "for agreeing to send him back to stand trial for these very serious charges". Bondi accused Abrego Garcia of playing a significant role in a smuggling ring that trafficked children, women, and MS-13 members for illegal entry into the country, as well as repeatedly smuggling firearms and drugs. After serving any potential prison sentence, Abrego Garcia is expected to be deported back to El Salvador.

Trump reportedly called Abrego Garcia a "pretty bad guy" to reporters. El Salvador’s President Bukele stated that Trump had asked him to transfer the migrant back to the USA for prosecution. "We work with the Trump administration, and if they demand the return of a gang member for prosecution, of course, we wouldn't refuse,” Bukele said on X.

Trump’s press secretary Abigail Jackson emphasized that Abrego Garcia’s return had no connection to his initial deportation. "There was no error," she stated on X. "He's coming back because a new investigation has uncovered such heinous crimes committed in the USA that only the American justice system can hold him fully accountable."

One of Abrego Garcia's attorneys, Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, accused the US government of abuse of power. Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen, who visited the migrants in El Salvador in mid-April, welcomed Abrego Garcia’s return to the USA. "For months, the Trump administration has disregarded the Supreme Court and our constitution," he declared. He expressed relief that Abrego Garcia would now receive a fair trial in the USA.

  • At the time of his return to the U.S., Abrego Garcia was not specifically charged with membership in the MS-13 gang, but faced allegations related to human smuggling. His case has gained significant attention due to the initial deportation error and the subsequent legal proceedings.
