Arrested Moldovan tycoon expresses intention to prove his innocence
Vladimir Plahotniuc Faces Extradition After Arrest in Greece
Vladimir Plahotniuc, a former Moldovan oligarch and political figure, was detained in Greece in July 2025 while attempting to flee. Plahotniuc, who is 59 years old, is wanted in Moldova for his involvement in a multibillion-dollar fraud scheme that allegedly siphoned over $1 billion from Moldova’s banking sector and state budget, often referred to as the "theft of the century" or related large-scale banking fraud case.
Plahotniuc served as the leader of Moldova’s Democratic party from 2016-2019. At the time, he was part of the governing coalition and served as deputy speaker of parliament. Following his detention at Athens International Airport on July 22, 2025, Moldovan authorities are expected to formally request his extradition from Greece. Greek courts will then determine whether extradition proceedings can move forward.
Plahotniuc denies the charges and claims the cases against him are fabricated. He has expressed his desire to return to Moldova to prove his innocence to the law enforcement authorities. However, Plahotniuc has also suggested that authorities might try to drag the extradition process out to ensure his return to the country comes after a September 28 election.
One of the major cases against Plahotniuc involves charges such as money laundering, illicit purchase of shares in several Moldovan financial institutions, and fraud connected with a state-run scrap metal company called Metalferos. The first arrest warrant, issued in October 2019, is related to money laundering and is the basis for an Interpol alert that was reinstated in 2025 after Moldovan authorities submitted new evidence.
Plahotniuc is also facing charges in Russia, adding a complex geopolitical dimension to the case. Reports indicate clandestine political negotiations involving high-level Kremlin officials aiming to influence Moldovan politics through Plahotniuc.
Plahotniuc's press spokesman, Adriana Vlas, dismissed his comments, saying the country wanted the justice system "to act, with the law in the forefront." Meanwhile, the pro-European President Maia Sandu's Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) may lose its majority in the upcoming September 28 election in Moldova, potentially impacting the extradition process.

The high-stakes extradition of Vladimir Plahotniuc, a former Moldovan oligarch and political figure, from Greece could significantly impact Moldova's business, political, and crime-and-justice landscapes. Plahotniuc's alleged involvement in a multibillion-dollar banking fraud case, often referred to as the "theft of the century," sparked a general-news frenzy in Moldova and beyond.
