Saying Goodbye to Detective Borowski: Axel Milberg's Unconventional Life and Career

- Arrested Gang Members Always Felt Unsettled

Who is Axel Milberg, you ask? Well, this 68-year-old actor has been keeping us hooked for over two decades as Klaus Borowski in the nordic idyll, a role he's about to depart from this coming Sunday at 20:15 Uhr on das Erste with "Tatort: Borowski and the Head of Medusa." But don't let his cozy exterior fool you, this cop's stories have never been mere feel-good fluff. In a candid chat with "Stern" magazine, Milberg opened up about his patchwork family, surprising pastimes, and his critical stance on the acting industry. "I've got issues with the genius cult that often pervades our field," he confessed.

In his signature role as Borowski, Milberg has been on the case for a staggering 21 years. So why the longevity? "We always made sure the stories remained unpredictable and often tried the impossible," he explains, referring to their exploits in Gothenburg, Geneva, Amrum, and even under the city streets. It's never been just a cozy ride.

The Struggle Behind the Patchwork Family

Peeling back the curtain, Milberg reveals himself as a family man with an unconventional history. He shares insights about his blended family with wife Judith. Together, they have a son, but Judith brought two more sons into the mix, while Milberg has another from a previous marriage. These non-biological sons have picked up a lot from him, and they share a strong bond, often fueled by a shared sense of humor.

Milberg speaks fondly of his adventurous side with his son Moritz, an emergency physician. Both share a love for wilderness escapades, but Moritz lives it up with ropes, canoes, tents, and spirit stoves, while Milberg claims to indulge in it "hour by hour, but dreams of it."

Three "Tatort" Crime Thrillers Inspired by Henning Mankell

Delving further into his "Tatort" experiences, Milberg offers compelling stories from behind the scenes. For instance, he recalls the daunting task of convincing Swedish bestselling author Henning Mankell, creator of "Kurt Wallander," to pen a script for "Tatort."

Back when they first met on a "Wallander" book tour, Milberg recounts timidly asking Mankell if he could write a story for him. Mankell declined, but as they grew closer over the years, the opportunity presented itself. Ultimately, Milberg was graced with the scripts for "Borowski and the Fourth Man" (2009), "Borowski and the Cool Dog" (2010), and "Borowski and the Festival of the North" (2017), all penned by none other than Henning Mankell himself.
