Arrest Warrant Suspension Affirmed for Silvano Aureoles in Pearld abundant Case; Court Upholds Halt on Detention Order
Former Michoacán Governor Silvano Aureoles Conejo remains at large following a ruling by the Sixth Collegiate Tribunal in Penal Matters, which upheld a provisional suspension of his arrest warrant. The suspension was initiated by Judge Sindy Ortiz Castillo of the Federal District in Penal Matters in Mexico City, preventing the Attorney General's Office (FGR) from arresting Aureoles for his alleged role in damaging the state treasury by over one billion pesos.
The FGR pushed for the suspension to be deemed null and void, citing a previous definitive suspension that Aureoles had obtained. However, the magistrates deemed it uncertain whether the provisional suspension was for the same arrest warrant or another order requiring Aureoles' presence.
In a separate development, Judge Jovita Vargas Alarcón of the Federal District in Penal Matters in Mexico City granted the FGR permission to detain Aureoles on May 27, 2025. The former governor allegedly failed to comply with the payment of a one million peso guarantee and his personal appearance before a judge within a five-day period for a separate case involving the diversion of resources for police headquarters construction.
The charges against Aureoles include embezzlement (peculado), illegal use of funds, association with criminal groups, and fraudulent administration, concerning the purported diversion of 3.412 billion pesos. While Aureoles' close collaborators are currently in preventive detention, Aureoles himself has not been arrested as of the latest update.
