Arrest Warrant for Former President Morales Remains Active: Ministerial Update

In a rollercoaster week, Bolivia's justice minister boldly declared that the arrest warrant for ex-leader Evo Morales on human trafficking charges is still very much valid, bucking a judge's earlier ruling that annulled it.

Morales, the first Indigenous president with a controversially barred fourth term ambition, stands accused of some shady dealings dating back to 2015, with mounting issues now surrounding his arrest.

Cesar Siles, the stern-faced justice minister, chatted to local TV, reiterating that the warrant, initially dished out last October, remains intact, despite a judge's decree earlier this week. Siles firmly stated that the case, from proceedings and charges to jurisdiction, remains unchanged and much in play.

The wanted poster pinned on Morales dates back to October, when the law dogs were hot on his tail for his alleged connection with a 15-year-old girl. Prosecutors allege he fathered a child with the teenager just a year later, with her folks eagerly offering consent for some backstage favors from Morales.

When asked about the judge's "nuts" decision to rescind the warrant, Siles remarked that it was suspended due to lingering procedural issues. "Justice has been served, mate," local press penned, citing an elated Siles.

At 65, the former coca leaf advocate (and ex-president of Bolivia from 2006 to 2019) chimes in, vehemently denying the allegations. He's quick to accuse his former ally-come-nemesis, President Luis Arce, of cruelly hunting him through the courts to keep him out of power.

As of May 3, the warrant stands reinstated. The judicial eagle still hasn't swooped in to nab Morales, despite his fugitive status declared earlier in 2025.
