Arrest of Former UFC Fighter BJ Penn Following Disturbing Altercation with Alleged Fraudulent Mother Figure

UFC legend BJ Penn found himself arrested twice over the weekend in Hawaii following a bizarre dispute with an elderly woman, who he suspects is an imposter posing as his mother.

The former two-division champion, now 46, shared a video on Instagram Sunday night showing police officers storming his residence and taking him into custody. Penn was charged with 'abuse family or household member: offensive physical contact' and was released on $2,000 bail at around 1:48am Monday.

According to TMZ Sports, the confrontation began earlier on Sunday when the woman reported that Penn took her mail and shined a bright light in her eyes, refusing to return it. The woman further alleged that she was shoved against a car by Penn when she attempted to move the light away from her face.

Penn was arrested over the allegations, booked into jail, and issued a warning citation ordering him to stay away from the alleged victim. However, he reportedly violated the citation just hours later, showing up to her home in the early hours of Monday, for which he was arrested a second time.

The Hawaiian fighter claimed in the caption of his Instagram video that the woman was a "fake Lorraine Shin," presumably referring to his mother's actual name and age, which is known to be 79 as per public records. The video in question showed someone waving a light, with a woman repeatedly shouting, "Hit me!"

His mother, Lorraine Shin, has since filed for a restraining order against him, citing concerns for her safety due to Penn's persistent accusations that she is an imposter who has supposedly "killed his family" and assumed his mother's identity.

Shin told the court she is convinced Penn suffers from Capgras syndrome—a rare psychological disorder characterized by an individual's false belief that a loved one has been replaced by an identical impostor. This syndrome, often associated with broader neurological or psychiatric conditions, may explain Penn's unfounded suspicions and the ensuing conflict.

Previously, Penn has posted numerous unsettling messages about his mother and brothers on social media. In a recent post, he asked authorities to investigate allegations of murder and to remove individuals he perceived as imposters from his property, claiming they were trying to steal his family's assets.

BJ Penn competed in the UFC from 2001 to 2019, winning multiple world titles before being inducted into the Hall of Fame. The events over the weekend mark a troubling deviation from his professional career.
