Arrest of Former UFC Champion for the Fifth Time in Four Months due to Alleged Domestic Disturbance

B.J. Penn, a UFC Hall of Famer and former lightweight and welterweight champion, found himself in legal trouble once again. On Tuesday, September 15, 2025, he was arrested in Pennsylvania for violating a court-ordered restraining order.

The altercation between Penn and his mother, Lorraine Shin, occurred at their home in Hilo, Hawaii. According to reports, the incident began when Shin confronted Penn about stealing her mail after a series of bizarre incidents. The details of these incidents have not been disclosed.

During the altercation, Penn allegedly grabbed Shin and shoved her against a 4-door gray sedan. This marked Penn's first arrest in a series of incidents that occurred in May and June of the same year. He was arrested on May 25, May 26, May 30, and June 12, although the details of these previous incidents are not publicly known.

Penn's mother, Lorraine Shin, successfully petitioned for a temporary restraining order against her son, which was later converted into a one-year order of protection in August. The order of protection was issued to protect Shin from any further harm or harassment.

Penn's arrest this time was for violating this court-ordered restraining order. His bail was set at $2,000. It's important to note that there is no information available about a court case scheduled for the year 2025.

There has been speculation about Penn's mental state, with some suggesting that he may be dealing with the rare psychological disorder, Capgras syndrome. This condition is thought to be causing him to think that his family has been replaced.

B.J. Penn has not fought for UFC since 2019. His last fight was against Clay Guida, which he lost by unanimous decision.

Trials for Penn are scheduled for late October and early May. The Pennsylvania police have made a statement about the latest arrest, but further details about the case are still pending.
