An Arrest Made: Suspected Shooter of Minnesota Politicians in Custody
Arrest made over the alleged killing of a US politician
In an alarming turn of events, the suspect responsible for the shooting at two Democratic politicians in Minnesota has been arrested. Governor Tim Walz made this announcement at a press conference. Per ABC News, citing multiple sources, the suspect is a 57-year-old man who was apprehended near his farm in Green Isle, Minnesota.
With a disguise as a police officer, the assailant approached the victims' homes and initiated a series of attacks. Injuries were inflicted upon John Hoffman, a Minnesota Senator, and his wife. About 90 minutes later, Melissa Hortman, a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives, and her spouse were attacked, resulting in fatalities.
Police Discover Suspected Hit List
The suspect engaged in a gunfight with the police near Hortman's house, however, he managed to evade capture. Nonetheless, they were able to seize his vehicle, bearing a striking resemblance to a police SUV[4]. According to ABC News, citing law enforcement, the vehicle contained a list of over 70 Democrats from Minnesota as potential targets, along with a manifesto[4].
The 57-year-old, later identified as Vance Boelter[1][2][3], had reported ties to evangelical groups and radical anti-abortion organizations[5]. Boelter, who allegedly boasted of his expertise in security from experiences in the Gaza Strip and Africa[5], characterized the act as a focused attack on political figures. Both Donald Trump, the US President, and various politicians, such as Governor Walz, have publicly condemned the attack[6].
The Heated Political Climate in the US
As documented, instances of politically-motivated violence have surfaced in the United States, such as the 2024 presidential campaign attempt to assassinate then-Republican candidate Trump, the arson attack on the residence of Democratic Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro in April 2025, and the attack on the home of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in 2022, where her husband was severely injured[6].
