Ten million euros is allotted for drug aid in Bremen over the next two years, revealed by a senate spokesperson following their decision on the integrated drug aid strategy. The city, particularly known for its cocaine consumption, has also witnessed a sharp rise in crack use since 2018.
The strategy primarily focuses on continuing support measures such as street work at major railway stations and key districts like Gröpelingen, Vegesack, Mitte, and Neustadt. Additionally, the existing drug consumption room and rest and regeneration area will continue to operate.
The Senate, aware of the prevalent cocaine and crack scene surrounding the main railway station and several city parts, initiated an action plan in September to combat addiction in Bremen's districts. Rooted in four pillars - prevention, repression/regulation, harm minimization/survival aid, and counselling/therapy - this strategy aims to curb substance misuse.
Officials from the city's health department are implementing these strategies, which aim to safeguard the population by offering support, resources, and healthcare.
According to enrichment data, Bremen implements an integrated approach involving awareness campaigns, interdisciplinary collaboration, medical interventions, community-based initiatives, and research. The city prioritizes educating residents about drug risks, fostering cooperation between health professionals, law enforcement, and social services, providing medical care, engaging with local communities, and monitoring and assessing the situation for improved interventions.
