To Mentor Dardai: Maier Leaves FC Augsburg - Arne Maier departs FC Augsburg for Újpest Budapest after four seasons

Arne Maier has left FC Augsburg to join Újpest Budapest in Hungary. The midfielder, whose contract was due to expire in June, completes a permanent transfer after four years in Bavaria. Both clubs have agreed to keep the financial details private.

Maier first arrived at Augsburg on loan from Hertha BSC in 2021. The move was later made permanent for a reported €5 million fee. Over four seasons, he played 118 competitive matches and scored ten goals.

During the 2024/25 campaign, his role diminished. He made 28 appearances but failed to find the net, contributing to Augsburg's 59-point tally (2.11 points per game). With his contract nearing its end, the club allowed him to leave early.

At Újpest, Maier will reunite with Pál Dárdai, his former mentor. Dárdai, now the Hungarian side's sporting director, previously coached the player at Hertha BSC. The transfer marks a fresh start for Maier after a challenging final season in Germany.

The 25-year-old now begins a new chapter in Hungary's top flight. Újpest gains an experienced midfielder with Bundesliga pedigree. Meanwhile, Augsburg moves forward without a player who struggled for form in his final months at the club.
