The Israeli military operation against the Islamist Palestinian organization Hamas in the Gaza Strip, which began following Hamas's large-scale attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, has entered its 22nd month. The conflict, marked by a series of phases including aerial campaigns, ground invasions, ceasefires, and renewed offensives, has caused severe humanitarian consequences for civilians in Gaza.

The war has seen Egypt, Qatar, and the US act as mediators in previous negotiations between Israel and Hamas. Recently, Hamas announced a delegation had arrived in Cairo for talks with Egyptian representatives regarding a potential ceasefire. The discussions are based on a 60-day ceasefire proposal and the release of hostages in the Gaza Strip, as announced by Cairo together with representatives from the US and Qatar on Tuesday.

Israel's security cabinet has decided to expand the operation against Hamas, aiming to neutralize the organization, cease rocket fire, secure Israel’s borders, and counter broader regional threats. The Israeli military's objectives include destroying Hamas's military infrastructure, including rocket launch sites, tunnels, command centers, and leadership.

The conflict has resulted in over 1200 deaths and 251 hostages taken in the Gaza Strip, according to Israeli reports. Hamas, on the other hand, claims that more than 61,700 people have been killed as a result of Israel's military operations in the Palestinian territory, though this figure is not independently verified.

The ongoing violence has had devastating effects on civilian mental health, family separations, and social stability in Gaza. Israeli blockades of Gaza restrict entry of food, medicine, fuel, and medical supplies, leading to famine-like conditions and the collapse of Gaza’s healthcare system. Large-scale damage to Gaza’s infrastructure and housing has forced mass displacement of civilians within the Strip.

The military operation is facing increasing criticism due to the ongoing catastrophic humanitarian situation. The military chief had argued that widening the offensive to Gaza would endanger the lives of hostages still held by Hamas. Residents in certain areas of Gaza City have reported tanks, explosions, air strikes, and drone use.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not initially provide a specific timeline for the start of the operation. However, he has stated the Israeli security cabinet's order to destroy the remaining Hamas strongholds in Gaza City and Al-Mawasi remains unchanged.

The European Union, despite being engrossed in its own politics and general news, has also found itself involved in the negotiations on the accession of the Republic of Cyprus to the European Union, as Cypriot leaders seek support from various parties in efforts to maintain regional stability amidst war-and-conflicts like the one unfolding in the Gaza Strip.
  2. As the Israeli military operation against Hamas continues to cause severe humanitarian consequences for civilians in Gaza, it serves as a stark reminder of the far-reaching effects of politics, not just within the territory in question, but also in international relations, given the involvement of world bodies such as the United Nations and various international news agencies in reporting on the conflict.
