Army Base in Georgia Experiences Shooting Incident, Single Suspect Apprehended
On Wednesday, August 6, 2025, a tragic incident unfolded at Fort Stewart in Georgia. U.S. Army Sergeant Quornelius Radford is accused of shooting and wounding five soldiers in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area using his personal handgun.
The base was placed on lockdown around 11 a.m. as law enforcement, including the FBI, Army Criminal Investigation Division, Georgia State Police, and the ATF, responded to the scene. The suspect was apprehended at 11:35 a.m., and the lockdown was lifted later in the afternoon after no further threats were found.
The five injured soldiers were taken to medical facilities, including Winn Army Community Hospital and Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah. All victims are expected to survive and be in stable condition. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, but it appears to involve coworkers at Radford's workplace.
A quick intervention by other soldiers who tackled Radford prevented further casualties. The Army's 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, established in 2016, is based at Fort Stewart, which is the largest Army post east of the Mississippi River and home to thousands of soldiers assigned to the Army's 3rd Infantry Division and their family members.
This incident at Fort Stewart is not an isolated event in the history of U.S. military bases. In 2013, a defense contract worker and former Navy reservist killed 12 people at Washington Navy Yard. In 2014, a soldier opened fire on his fellow service members at Fort Hood, Texas, resulting in 13 deaths and over 30 wounds.
Just days earlier in 2019, a U.S. Navy sailor shot two people to death before killing himself at Pearl Harbor, the Naval station in Hawaii. In 2019, an aviation student opened fire in a classroom at Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida, resulting in 3 deaths and injuries to another dozen people, including two sheriff's deputies.
Fort Stewart's military leadership has expressed support for the victims and condemned the violence. The Army is conducting an investigation into the shooting, and authorities continue to work diligently to understand the motives behind this tragic event.
