Army and NDRF unite in Assam for life-saving flood response drills

A joint flood relief exercise named Exercise Jal Raksha took place in Doomdooma, Assam, on March 16–17, 2026. The training involved the Indian Army's Red Shield Gunners and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), focusing on improving coordination during flood emergencies. Both teams worked together to sharpen their response skills in realistic conditions.

The exercise started with a display of specialised equipment used in flood relief. Army officials then delivered a detailed briefing on the structure of flood relief columns, their specific roles, and operational strengths. This prepared participants for the practical phases ahead.

Field activities were carried out at two key locations—Rupai and Tengapani Ghat. These sites, positioned along major water bodies, provided lifelike conditions for rescue and relief drills. The training aimed to simulate real flood scenarios, ensuring teams could practice effective response tactics. The joint effort between the Army and NDRF highlighted the importance of seamless teamwork. While the exact number of NDRF units involved was not disclosed, the exercise reinforced shared strategies for handling flood crises in vulnerable regions.

The two-day event strengthened flood response capabilities in Assam. By combining military and disaster response expertise, the exercise improved readiness for future emergencies. Officials confirmed that such drills will continue to enhance coordination between the Army and NDRF.
