Darren Waller Joins Miami Dolphins After Stint with New York Giants
Darren Waller, a former standout tight end for the Oakland Raiders, has joined the Miami Dolphins following a brief stint with the New York Giants. The trade, which took place in the 2025 offseason, marks Waller's return to the NFL after a retirement spell in the 2024 offseason.
Waller's tenure with the Giants in 2023 was marked by injuries and limited availability. Despite this, he managed to catch 52 passes for 552 yards and score one touchdown in the 12 games he played. His best season was with the Raiders in 2019, where he enjoyed consecutive 1,000-yard seasons.
The Dolphins traded Jonnu Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers to acquire Waller. However, Waller will start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list due to lingering injuries.
Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel plans to integrate Waller into the team slowly. This is partly due to the lack of depth behind Waller at tight end and the fact that the lack of practicing together prevents Tua Tagovailoa from fully connecting with his new receiving corps.
McDaniel is optimistic about Waller, Jaylen Waddle, and Tyreek Hill being ready by Week 1. Waller's addition to the Dolphins roster has raised high expectations for the team in 2025.
It's worth noting that Jonnu Smith made the 2025 Pro Bowl roster, but his departure leaves a significant gap that Waller will aim to fill. Waller's return to the NFL and his subsequent trade to the Dolphins promises an exciting new chapter in his career.
