In the gamut of clubbing fists in the name of conflict and power, the German government has given a nod towards the value of half a billion, approving arms exports worth a whopping €485.1 million to Israel. Kicking off on October 7, 2023, and running through till May 13, 2025, this batch of weaponry and military gear will soon find their way across the border, according to correspondence between the Ministry of Economics and Germany's Left Party, obtained by the German Press Agency.

While the brand-new Union and SPD government, which took charge on May 6, has yet to signal their intentions regarding post-takeover export permits, clarity on the matter remains elusive. State Secretary Bernhard Kluttig's letter remains coy on the matter.

On the heels of a CDU politician, Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, has recently raised eyebrows, questioning the need for further approvals in an interview with the "Süddeutsche Zeitung". He expressed concern that the ongoing conditions in the Gaza Strip may be in violation of international humanitarian law. If the situation warrants it, Wadephul confirmed that further arms deliveries would be granted, though leaving the door open for possible denials if deemed necessary.

International Calls for Action

The debate surrounding German arms deliveries to Israel has reached a fever pitch, with legal proceedings underway at The Hague's International Court of Justice. Nicaragua, represented by the Latin American nation, has accused Germany of being complicit in genocide through their support of Israel's military machine, specifically through arms exports. The panel of judges declined an urgent request to halt the deliveries in late April 2024, but have not dismissed the lawsuit itself.

Seizing the opportunity to make his stand, Ulrich Thoden, the Left Party's defense policy spokesman, is demanding an immediate stop to all arms deliveries to Israel. He cautions, "Otherwise, it could make itself guilty of complicity in war crimes."
