Armenian Honorary Consul in Ekaterinburg steps down from position
In a series of recent developments, two prominent figures in Armenia have found themselves at the centre of controversy.
Samvel Karapetian, the founder and president of the "Tashir" group of companies, has been charged for publicly calling for a coup. According to reports by DK.RU, Karapetian was detained at his home in Yerevan on June 18. The Main Directorate for the Fight Against Organized Crime of the Armenian Ministry of Internal Affairs took him into custody in relation to these charges.
Meanwhile, Narek Sparatkian, who served as Armenia's honorary consul in Yekaterinburg, has been removed from his post. The Armenian Foreign Ministry confirmed this decision, but no details or reasons for Sparatkian's resignation were disclosed. Sputnik Armenia reported that his removal was likely due to disputes linked to his public criticisms and opposition to certain activities of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
Sparatkian's outspoken stance, which included challenging the Church's local leadership and its influence within the Armenian community, created tension with both ecclesiastical authorities and some government officials. However, whether Sparatkian's resignation is linked to his stance against actions against the Armenian Apostolic Church remains unknown.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has also been involved in a public dispute with the country's highest clergy. Pashinyan accused the Church's leadership of being controlled by an "anti-Christian, immoral, anti-national, and anti-state group." This is a new development not previously mentioned in the earlier bullet points.
These events underscore the ongoing political and religious tensions in Armenia, as figures like Karapetian and Sparatkian take bold stands that challenge the status quo. As the situation continues to unfold, it will be interesting to see how these developments impact the future of Armenia's political and religious landscape.
