Armed Individual Released Under Strict Supervision Following "Rust" Incident

Rust Armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed Released from Prison

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer of the Western film "Rust," was released from jail on Monday, as confirmed by New Mexico authorities to Entertainment Weekly. The 28-year-old served approximately 18 months in prison for her involuntary manslaughter conviction, which stemmed from the fatal shooting on the set of the film in 2021.

Gutierrez-Reed's release comes under strict probation conditions, outlined in documents obtained by Entertainment Weekly. She is required to report to a probation officer in Bullhead City, Arizona, immediately. The probation conditions also include a no-contact order with the victim's family, a nighttime curfew, and a prohibition from being near weapons.

Early in March 2024, Gutierrez-Reed was found guilty of negligently contributing to the death of camerawoman Halyna Hutchins. In mid-April, the sentencing judge issued a sentence of 18 months in prison, the maximum sentence without probation, according to Variety. The court stated that Gutierrez-Reed had shown no remorse at any point. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer was quoted as saying, "You alone turned a safe weapon into a deadly one. Without you, Mrs. Hutchins would be alive."

The incident shocked the world when a shot fired from a gun held by actor Alec Baldwin killed Hutchins. In October 2021, Hutchins died from her injuries after being hit by a bullet while on the set of "Rust." After years of delays, "Rust" finally hit theaters a few weeks ago, but it was a massive flop. According to Box Office Mojo, the film has so far grossed only around $27,000 worldwide.

I'm not going to divulge the details of Hannah Gutierrez-Reed's strict probation conditions, but they do include a no-contact order with the victim's family and a prohibition from being near weapons. Interestingly enough, despite the extensive coverage of Justin Baldwin's shooting incident on the set of "Rust," the film recently released in cinemas, but it was a remarkable flop, grossing only around $27,000 worldwide.
